The Red-Tipped Match
You can learn from a match. If you think about it, a match is a pretty magical thing. One minute it is a solid, stationary boring little thing, and the next minute it explodes into sound, color, fire, and smoke. If you are over the age of four, you have probably lost your fascination for the lowly match, but Dr. Davis has a technique that
may inspire you pyrotechnically to great confidence and achievement.
The Red-Tipped Match
You do not need all the information in many books or even one book to guide you on the path to success. Often it only takes one thought or idea to make all the difference. Napoleon Hill calls the secret “one idea backed by enthusiasm.” I have chosen these same words for my rallying cry, with a slight addition. I say the secret to success is “one idea backed by enthusiasm sustained.” If you get an idea in your mind and keep it there, nothing can deny you.
The step-by-step process:
1. Imagine the common red-tipped match that will spark and then burst into flame when you strike it on a match box. The match is your idea, your goal, dream or objective. You have to have a match before any magic will happen. If you don't have one now, your first step will be to find one. If you have a match, be sure you can describe it in clear, precise terms. Do that now on a sheet of paper. Answer the question, “What is my goal, dream or objective?”
2. Once you have your idea or match, the next step is to strike it! Magic will happen when you add energy and enthusiasm. Get excited about your goal, dream, or objective! Fantasize about it. Look forward to it. See you doing the process necessary for achievement of your goal. See you attaining it. By thinking positively about what we want to happen, energy and enthusiasm naturally occur. The match strikes!
3. Once you have an idea and are excited about it, care for the fire you have started. Add tinder and wood to the blaze daily. Keep the flames burning hot and steady. Never let the fire die down or go out! This will happen if you doubt or think negatively about your idea. Doubt, fear, and worry act the same as water being pored on your fire. Do not allow these to enter your mind ever.
The fuel to add to your fire, that will guarantee a continuous, steady, white hot blaze, are positive thoughts, ideas, and images. Imagination is the combustible ingredient that guarantees success to any idea. Your red-tipped match will light a fire of enthusiasm which will be sustained by positive imagination. Keep the fire burning and you and your idea will go far!
End
Let's put this idea to the test. I will follow the process myself in solving one of my own problems.
Step One: What is my goal, dream or objective?
I want to lower my golf scores!
Step Two: Get excited about your goal, dream, or objective!
The best way for me to get excited about lowering my golf scores is to have a clear process I know will get the job done. I want to have a doable plan that will work. This will be my solution to the entire activity.
At this point, I produce the following plan to achieve my objective:
1. Practice once a week at the golf range
2. Golf three times a week, keeping score and tracking scores over time so I can clearly see my progress.
3. Eliminate negative thoughts, accentuate positive thoughts. Daily practice seeing me achieve my objective. 15 minutes every day!
4. Evening practice. Practice golf swing 15 minutes every day I don't golf.
5. Perform warm-up stretching exercises and practice 20 minutes before every golf round. Special attention to putting and chipping since these will be half the strokes I take during my round.
Step Three: Sustain energy and enthusiasm for your project.
Now that I have my plan and I can clearly see that it will work, why not get excited
about it? Why wouldn't I keep the fire burning? I intend to do my plan and work on my
positive thinking regarding the plan. I know I will sustain the process and do the plan
as long as lowering my golf scores is an important goal for me. Will this work? If I do
the process, there is no question my golf scores will go down.
